Power to the Mums


Is there nothing that will derail the Mumsnet phenomena? With 20,000 posts a day, 20 million hits a month, the subjects discussed range from work, how to deal with troublesome toddlers who refuse to potty train through to – gasp - sex! Now in its twelfth year of operation it really has developed into a booming form of new media – more of a social enterprise than a business.

In the past month alone I have read the following news stories generated by the influential site: the launch of a We Believe You campaign to support sex attack victims; how families are spurning traditional holidays in favour of camping and home swaps as the travel industry fails to provide flexible family options and finally a partnership with Waitrose.com, kicking off with a sponsored forum on Mumsnet asking users what they would most like their children to cook for them on Mother’s Day.

A mum myself, I do not subscribe to the site – I’m not a ‘Mumsnetter’, but I take heart from the fact that there is this band of strong, educated women who are helping mums get more of a say in the media - good for them and the greater sphere of womankind.

My only question is - what about the poor dads?
